Holistic Nutrition

The goal of a holistic nutritionist is to explore every aspect of your being to determine the CAUSE of ill health and correct it with whole, natural foods, natural health products, and attention to emotional influences on well being.  Our practice involves seeing each person as a WHOLE BEING and addressing all the aspects of the whole- mind, body and spirit.  We generally see pharmaceutical drugs, environmental pollutants, toxic emotions and nutrient-void, processed foods as barriers to achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health.  We believe in the body’s innate ability to heal itself of ANY condition when we simply remove physical, mental or emotional barriers and give it the nutrition it needs to build healthy tissue.

The difference between Dieticians and Holistic Nutritionists

Registered Dietitians

  • Work with the Canada Food Guide
  • Government regulated
  • Work with MD’s and in hospitals, mainstream science-based
  • Deal with calories, fat grams, protein grams and carbohydrate grams along with vitamins and minerals.
  • Often recommend things like artificial sweeteners, and fat substitutes.
  • Tend not to promote dietary supplements, organic, and free-range products.
  • Services are generally covered by public and/or private health insurance plans.

Holistic or Natural Nutritionists

  • Deal with the whole person offering recommendations specific to each persons’ needs.
  • Voluntarily regulated by non-profit, private organizations (IONC)
  • Work toward getting to the root cause of the illness or imbalance, considering toxicity, food and environmental sensitivities, micro-organism imbalances and pollution as pieces of the puzzle.
  • Recommend nutrients, foods and detoxification to help the body to heal itself.
  • Make suggestions for lifestyle, and supplement interventions.
  • Consider the long-term impact and implications of additives, preservatives, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and herbicides, and don’t trust short-term studies that suggest these chemicals are safe for human consumption.
  • Avoid making recommendations based on biased science.
  • Services are sometimes covered by private health insurance plans*
